Model testing using shake tables – current practice
The use of shake tables has grown considerably over the last few decades to study both the possible impact of earthquakes on new constructions such as dams, buildings and bridges, and also the possible damage to existing structures. The latter studies are particularly useful to assess the risk to sites of cultural and heritage importance and also to investigate possible means of reinforcing such structures before they are damaged irreparably. The sophistication of shake tables has grown to allow the simulation of larger earthquakes and also the replication of movement in real earthquakes in all three dimensions.
