Bioregions are the wider areas – usually the watersheds – that cities occur in. There is considerable interest in planning green infrastructure on a bioregional basis in order to improve watershed management but also provide ecosystem services. A regional approach to green and blue infrastructure planning allows authorities to make the landscape more permeable to both people and wildlife through the establishment of ecological networks. The hinterlands of cities may also become more important for the production of biomass for energy production, for the growing of local food and the creation of community forests. Planners continue to promote green belts, and city‐wide green infrastructure networks (also known as green grids), which are often associated with plans to improve sustainable transportation and sustainable drainage, including cycling and pedestrian routes.
