Application of Zeolites to Environmental Remediation
This chapter examines the use of zeolites for environmental remediation. Both natural and synthetic zeolites have been used for remediation purposes; however, due to their cost, the synthetic ones are normally only used in special circumstances. Zeolites have been widely studied for the removal of arsenic from both contaminated wastewater and groundwater. Zeolites have also found use as adsorbents for organic molecules including phenols, aniline, and nicotine. Zeolites have been used in agriculture and animal husbandry since the 1960s, mainly in Southeast Asia, which has widespread natural deposits. There are three natural zeolites that are widely used: clinoptilolite, chabazite, and phillipsite. Recently zeolites have been examined as potential slow release agents for a number of drugs. Due to the cost implications, natural zeolites have found favour in remediation, while synthetic zeolites have found favour as slow release agents.
