A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
The term performance metrics applies to all physical qualities and properties of the built environment, whole buildings and building assemblies that are expressible in an engineering way, predictable at the design stage and controllable during and after construction. Characteristic of performances is their hierarchical structure, top down nature, with at the highest level the built environment, followed by the whole building, then all building assemblies also called building parts and finally the materials and material layers composing the assemblies. A whole set of functional demands helps in establishing a fitness‐for‐purpose approach, from which performance formulations emanate. Functionality has a major impact on floor layout, all room and auxiliary space dimensions and on the finishes used. Building physics manages the hygrothermal, acoustic and visual performances and related metrics and requirements. For materials, basic is their fire behaviour with a distinction between burnable and nonburnable.
