A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Conforming to the guidance concerned with internal and external fire spread is generally a straightforward matter and compliance may be achieved through the use of adequate fire‐resisting construction. This chapter illustrates basic fire‐resistance requirements in a single‐family dwelling where the converted roof space creates a three‐storey building. It considers means of escape and other elements of fire safety in loft conversions in single‐family dwelling houses. As with other aspects of the conversion process, it is emphasised that it is not possible to adopt a one‐size‐fits‐all approach to fire safety: each conversion must be assessed individually.
