A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Digital Vernacular
This chapter discusses how advances in digital fabrication have instigated a design revolution, generating a wealth of invention and innovation that is sparking the imagination of a new generation of vernacular designers. A network of activities has grown around this method of fabrication in a relatively short period of time. Vernacular architecture is the supreme evolutionary survivor for a specific programmatic question, local context, community and technique, with it being a delicate equilibrium between form and function. The qualities of vernacular architecture can be examined to determine why they are so successful; they can be embedded within models, and information about digital fabrication can help to generate intelligent and informed design systems. Inventive methods have emerged from project‐specific applications developed by a handful of designers and fabricators. The ability to mass‐produce digitally irregular building components within the same facility introduced the notion of ‘mass customization’ to building design and production. Mass customization is sometimes referred to as systematic customization and can be defined as the mass production of individually customized goods and services.
