A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Collaboration and Interoperability
A critical aspect of Building Information Modeling (BIM) servers is that they allow collaborative management of projects at the building object level, rather than at a file level. A fundamental purpose of a BIM server is to help manage the synchronization of multiple models representing a project. This chapter focuses on the issues and methods for synchronizing and managing the multiple representations of a building project and the management of these heterogeneous representations. Different data exchange methods can be deployed depending on the causes of interoperability problems. Exchanges can be classified in one of the three main ways. They are: direct links, file‐based data exchange and model‐server based data exchange. Schemas are defined using graphical data modeling languages such as EXPRESS‐G, Entity Relationship Diagrams (ERD), or UML Class Diagrams, or textual data modeling languages such as EXPRESS or XML Schema Definition (XSD). The chapter provides a quick reference and overview of BIM‐related standards efforts.
