Pre‐Mining Planning for Post‐Mining Land Use: Applying Principles of Comprehensive Planning and Landscape Architecture to Reclamation
Reclamation of drastically disturbed lands is a critical issue as pressure on the land resource increases with the growing world population and the concern for ecological stability. This chapter describes the theory behind a comprehensive approach to reclamation and addresses some of the practical applications. The profession of landscape architecture brings a useful perspective to reclamation and to establishing postmining land uses. In applying a comprehensive planning model, landscape architecture recognizes that the value of land reclaimed to particular uses is related to land use needs in an area. Design considerations related to major land use types have implications specific to mining and reclamation. The chapter presents a sampling of factors or attributes applied to particular land uses and a discussion of integrating postmining land use considerations in the design and management of mining operations, including the strategy of phased land use.
