Performance of Large‐Diameter Steel Pipe at St. Paul
This article provides a comparison of the design assumptions with actual field performance of two large‐diameter steel pipelines constructed by the city of St. Paul, Minnesota, during the period from 1958 to 1960. The work was performed under two separate projects, designated as the 6O‐in. Fridley line and the 90‐in. Vadnais line. Each of these two new lines parallels an existing concrete line of equal size and capacity. At the present pumping head of 145 ft, the capacity of the Fridley line is about 50 mgd. The capacity of the Vadnais line, with its available head of 12 ft, is about 96 mgd. Specifications for each project provided for alternative bids on reinforced concrete pressure pipe and coal‐tar coated cement‐mortar lined steel pipe. In each instance, the low bidder selected steel pipe.
