Water Main Installation Across the Meramec River
As a result of industrial development and customer potential, the St. Louis County Water Company, in 1956, had to get a major transmission main across the Meramec River to serve the area west and south of the river, which had previously been the boundary of the company's service area. The Meramec is a river of extremes, with rapid fluctuation between a low‐stage flow of 127 mgd, to its all‐time flood crest, when the river is about 35 ft higher, with a flow of 113 bgd. Overnight rises of 5‐17 ft are not uncommon. This rapid fluctuation was of primary concern during the planning and installation of the crossing. The article discusses issues with the crossing site, installation of two 12‐in. steel pipelines, dredging, pipe bedding, work raft, work period, pressure tests, and costs.
