Dependability Engineering for Data Center Infrastructures
Reliability engineering uses equipment reliability statistics, probability theories, system functional analysis, and dysfunctional analysis to set requirements, measure or predict reliability, identify system weakness points, and propose improvements of the system. Dependability will be used to name the reliability and availability performance of a data center infrastructure. This chapter presents a few basic concepts such as the definition of dependability vocabulary, the definition of dependability data and indexes, and some basic probabilistic calculations that could be used for dependability assessment. It then discusses the system dependability analysis methods. After the presentation of the main steps of system dependability analysis, the main system failure analysis methods are described. The chapter then focuses on data center dependability assessment and presents some key points to perform efficient and accurate dependability assessments. Finally some key points to manage dependability assessment and tier standard architectures are discussed.
