FIRE RESISTANCE OF STAINLESS STEEL AXIALLY LOADED ELLIPTICAL HOLLOW SECTION COLUMNS
In spite of the initial cost of stainless steel, its application as a structural material has been increasing. Stainless steel has different advantages when compared to conventional carbon steel. The corrosion resistance and aesthetic appearance are the most known, but its higher fire resistance can also be decisive. This work presents a numerical study on the behaviour of stainless steel members composed of elliptical hollow sections subjected to axial compression at elevated temperatures. The numerical ultimate load bearing capacities were obtained applying finite element models and the results were compared with simplified calculation formulae from Eurocode 3, concluding that this methodology is not appropriate for the type of profiles here analysed.
