Active and Passive Earth Pressures
Earth Retaining Structures
A large volume of work has to be carried out in infrastructure where earthworks and excavations require supporting structures that resist against the lateral pressures of the earth, water bodies and other surrounding features. This chapter aims to present the rules governing the field of supports, and current French practices in this area. Designing an earth retaining structure involves factoring in the requirement for it to resist the following actions: “active” and “passive” pressures of the soils located on both sides of the screen; actions of overloads; seismic actions; and climate variations. Currently, there are three approaches used in the designing of retaining structures: the classic failure analysis; the reaction coefficient method; and the numerical calculation in finite elements. French soil engineers are the only ones to have introduced the notion of “reaction coefficient” in the resolution of issues regarding earth retaining structures.
