Groundwater: the hidden resource
Only recently have people become aware that groundwater contamination can adversely affect drinking water quality and endanger human health. Just in the past year numerous reports have surfaced on the devastating impact that long‐term pollution may have on groundwater. In an attempt to prevent groundwater contamination, the Environmental Protection Agency is now in the process of developing regulations that will govern dumping of wastes, sanitary landfill operations, and underground Injection of waste material. During the 1980 AWWA conference in Atlanta, Ga., a discussion was held concerning groundwater resources, comoderated by Thomas J. Buchanan, assistant chief hydrologist, US Geological Survey, Washington, D.C., and David W. Miller, partner, Geraghty & Miller Consulting Engineers, Syosset, NY. Participants In the group were George L. Craft, water resources engineer, AWWA, Denver, Colo.; August A. Guerrera, chief chemist, Suffolk County Water Authority, Oakdale, N.Y.; Craig D. Vogt, chief, science and technology branch, US Environmental Protection Agency, Washington, D.C.; and Edward I. Selig, attorney, Boston, Mass.
