Conjunctive Use of Ground and Surface Waters
This article discusses management of groundwater basins in California. The first phase in a management study is a thorough geologic survey of the area that attempts a quantitative definition of the geometric and hydraulic characteristics of the groundwater basin and provides a foundation for the second phase, the hydrologic study, and for the formulation and evaluation of alternative plans of management in the third phase. All described management techniques may be needed in a particular basin. To effect optimum use of underground storage capacity, artificial recharge of the groundwater basin will be required to some extent in most areas. Through reconnaissance‐level studies, both the techniques needed and the legislative action required to implement a local water resource plan are identified.
