A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
SoBe Walk‐Up Apartments
This chapter presents the history and development process of SoBe Walk‐Up Apartments. It then addresses changing trends in architecture and urban design of SoBe Walk‐Up Apartments. The chapter is also an ideal resource for urban planners, housing developers, builders, and housing trust professionals. The starting signal for Miami's frenzied development was provided through Henry Flagler's decision in 1896 to extend his Florida East Coast Railways from West Palm Beach, the intended terminus, further south to Miami. Fundamental for the emergence of South Beach's dense urban fabric were the dimensions and the straightforwardness of the rectilinear urban grid that the Lummus brothers, the third in the team of influential early developers, projected onto their holdings. Today, South Beach is predominantly known for its Art Deco architecture. In the history of the place this style however only occurred at the third development stage, during the 1930s.
