A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
A Smart City Masterplan, Kigali
This chapter analyzes Kigali's Master Plan 2040, which includes a rapid rebuilding of the city, innovation hubs, new business districts and sweeping new developments. Using a variety of sources, including the official plans from Rwanda and Kigali, news articles and academic studies, it examines how private investment is driving much of these developments and what effect that may have on the sustainability, equity and resilience of the future Kigali. The Kigali Master Plan necessitates continual partnership and investment, especially from foreign firms and ICT companies. Partnering with companies offering products and services aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals is one potential. Studies have shown that households at the bottom of the pyramid are slower to test and adopt new consumer items. “Consequently, sales and marketing efforts involve deploying a substantial number of people with sales skills and deep product knowledge ‐ an expensive proposition”.
