Using a water quality index to determine and compare creek water quality
Creek water quality is difficult to characterize and understand. To address this, a water quality index (WQI) has been used to determine a measurable level for water quality. The purpose of the WQI is to provide a means to conduct a site‐to‐site comparison and create a baseline of water quality within a watershed. The WQI is a unitless number ranging from 1 to 100. The higher the number, the better the quality of water; generally, scoring 90–100 is excellent, 70–90 is good, 50–70 is fair, 25–50 is poor, and so on. The WQI is determined by calculating nine weighted water quality parameters. This method was used in a portion of Fountain Creek in Colorado—10 sample sites were analyzed once per month during an 18‐month period to establish seasonal variation and a baseline of water quality and to conduct a site‐to‐site comparison.
