Spectrophotometric Determination of Sevin in Natural Waters
This article discusses a spectrophotometric method that was developed for the determination of sevin (l‐naphthyl‐N‐methylcarbamate) as well as its hydrolysis product, l‐naphthol, in natural waters. The quantitative determination involves the extraction with chloroform and the hydrolysis of sevin to I‐naphthol. The latter reacts with 4‐aminoantipyrine and an oxidizing agent in alkaline medium to form a red‐colored complex. Ammonia‐phosphate buffer was used to stabilize the pH at 8.2 ± 0.3. Free I‐naphthol, if present, is removed from the chloroform extract into a basic aqueous solution and can be determined separately. The sensitivity is about 5 µg/l for sevin and 8 µg/l for l‐naphthol. Recoveries were 98.5 per cent for sevin and 99 per cent for I‐naphthol.
