A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
This chapter examines how Modernism and the contemporary ornamental trend are related through issues pertaining to subjectivity and politics. Designed and fabricated with the help of the computer, contemporary ornamentation is inseparable from an inquiry into our rapidly changing definition of materiality. Ornament is mobilised to reconstruct a highly personal approach to the world. No matter that some ornamental practices, like piercing and tattoos, actually present a mass character, the aim is usually to assert one's identity and unique vision. If ornamental pleasure has returned, the relation between contemporary décor and social ranking and prestige remains tainted with ambiguity. Present‐day architectural ornaments connect to questions of social ranking through the type of programme they usually adorn: prestigious museums, stadiums and theatres, high‐end offices and condominiums. Ornament presents us with a kind of mirror. In this mirror, we see ourselves as we believe we are and would like to be.
