A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Interweaving Practice
This chapter describes how the development of digital tools in the world of engineering designs has changed considerably, rapidly evolving over the past couple of decades, with the notion of computer‐aided design (CAD), for example, having transformed from its original 1960s idea, from ‘design tool’ to ‘drafting system.’ Today, Autodesk has managed to establish itself as a leader in the CAD market, first with the development of AutoCAD and then with its BIM counterpart, Revit. Access to shared online databases of information, such as custom‐building components and weather data for environmental analysis, has allowed the sharing and improvement of this data. The integrated package is software that comes with its own proprietary modeling interface, a predefined data‐structure and specific output formats. The interoperable model, on the other hand, is an object‐oriented approach to CAD software, based on the ability to interface different software packages in a flexible, interchangeable way by accessing the functionality through their APIs. The chapter features various architectural designs and models, including 4 Knight Architects with AKT II, Merchant Square Bridge, London, UK, 2014, Heatherwick Studio with AKT II, Al Fayah Park, Abu Dhabi, 2015, and Zaha Hadid Architects with AKT II, Central Bank of Iraq, Baghdad, Iraq, 2014.
