Monitoring the effect of zebra mussels on raw‐water intakes
This new index provides a straightforward and economic means of monitoring water intakes for blockage and capacity loss.
Many raw‐water intakes in the Great Lakes are threatened by infestations of zebra mussels. Hydraulic testing and visual inspection of the intakes tend to be time‐consuming and costly. The authors introduce an index (the damping ratio) that can be simply and inexpensively used to monitor the conditions of water intakes by signaling a change in flow resistance. The authors calculated some damping ratios and compared them with hydraulic data from drawdown tests. The results show that the damping ratio index has a direct friction coefficient of the intake.
