Control of Corrosion in Water Systems
This article begins by providing a brief overview of corrosion and the various sources of corrosion. A number of corrosion control approaches are discussed including: electrically insulating the anode from the cathode; electrically insulating anode or cathode (or both) from the electrolyte; treating the electrolyte so that it will have a high electric resistance, retarding the flow of corrosion current; use of nonmetallic materials; and, cathodic protection, making the entire metal surface cathodic to an external anode. Galvanic protection systems and impressed‐current systems are discussed, along with qualifying conditions, and design criteria.
