A consultant, of course, can be anyone the client or the architect considers necessary to assist in the development of the project. On small projects, there may be no consultants because the architect feels able to deal with the whole of the design, production information, and administration, including inspection on site. In some projects the architect may be a consultant on the same basis as other consultants if another professional is the lead consultant or perhaps where a project manager has been engaged by the client. Consultants are rarely mentioned in building contracts. Generally, the only people mentioned are the architect or contract administrator (sometimes referred to as project manager), sometimes the quantity surveyor, the contractor, and the employer. Consultants wishing to issue instructions should issue them to the architect first so that the architect can issue them as architect's instructions.
