Stairs and Railings
A typical stair is made up of three basic components: stringers, treads, and risers. Three primary components make up a railing: horizontal rails, vertical support posts, and infill. Just as with stairs, building information modeling (BIM) software typically has a series of tools that will generate an entire railing based on which rails, posts, and infill are selected. Treads are mainly affected by their appearance and the material from which they were created. Risers are fairly straightforward and simple components, and in many cases either exist or don't exist. The graphical limitations to the development of stairs within some BIM software tools minimize the accuracy of the stairs' appearance. Railings offer slightly more control of the graphic aspect and appearance of the component. Most of the attributes and equations associated with a set of stairs and railings are actually built into the BIM software platform.
