Proposed Direct Ultraviolet Determination of Nitrate
This article discusses the absorbance of an acidified potable water sample containing nitrate ion that is measured at 206 mµ against a similarly acidified distilled water blank. A standard curve is prepared in a similar manner, using standard concentrations of nitrate ion. The nitrate content of the sample is calculated from the absorbance of the sample and the standard curve. The absorbance curve (in mµ) of the nitrate ion should be determined for the particular ultraviolet instrument used, as instrument characteristics at this wave length may give a nitrate absorption maximum at a wave length slightly different from that quoted in this article.
