Digital Field Devices and Their Importance for Maintenance of Chemical Plant The term “digital field device” is briefly discussed in order to demonstrate the extent to which digitalization has created conditions for increased and “new” functionality in the field. The body of the article then classifies and describes this functionality according to elementary, shifted, and extended measuring functionality and maintenance functionality. The ensuing advantages and disadvantages for chemical plant maintenance are considered. The key role of communication in the field becomes very clear. An attempt is also made to present some future prospects for digital field devices.
