Understanding Uncertainty
This chapter describes techniques to deal with uncertainty in site‐specific applications. Although the management of uncertainty can be a subject in its own right, the authors describe ways to incorporate uncertainty to improve fire performance understanding. The use of degree‐of‐belief probabilistic values for identified scenario conditions enables all cells within the window of uncertainty to be evaluated with the same criteria. The chapter illustrates applications using degree‐of‐belief probabilistic estimates with the framework structure. Although the authors use automatic sprinkler performance to illustrate the process, the techniques are appropriate for all components of the complete building‐fire safety system. Framework networks, event evaluations, calculation of results, and graphing of performance form an interrelated package. Although the authors express performance in probabilistic terms, the analysis is deterministic. It uses all of the information that seems appropriate, much of which is obtained during the analysis that establish the window of uncertainty.
