A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
This chapter presents a case study from Austin, Texas, to illustrate the disconnect between what typical jobs pay and the cost of new housing. Although “workforce” salaries are enough to qualify for some of the multifamily units, very few new housing choices are available even for families with incomes from two “service” jobs. Small‐scale manufacturing businesses can diversify employment in walk‐to neighborhood centers and small downtowns. A retail ambassador (RA) will help identify the entrepreneurs and “mom and pops” who become the building blocks of a development. Once the right people with the right business idea have been found, the RA must help the entrepreneurs visualize every aspect of their store. As increasing numbers of people move into densely developed and populated cities, integrating recycling practices into high rise multifamily and commercial buildings is essential to a zero‐waste strategy.
