Evaluating the embedded energy in real water loss
This research considers the issue of water distribution and aging infrastructure within the context of the water–energy nexus. Because it takes energy to treat and distribute drinking water, infrastructure repair that reduces real water losses matters for both water and energy conservation efforts. The current research estimates the embedded energy in real water losses, and suggests that water systems should quantify these potential savings when developing future capital improvement plans. The current research uses the best available data from a representative cross‐section of water systems, including estimated water losses and publicly available data on energy consumption. Increased future energy costs and increased pressures for energy and water efficiencies will likely bolster the priority for distribution system improvements to decrease real water losses.
