A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
This chapter addresses the many dilemmas that can arise for construction professionals and offers practical guides and recommendations for maintaining ethical principles and practices under different scenarios. Construction‐related ethical dilemmas can be from a wide and different range of issues that may be to do with planning, conservation, waste management, land contamination, water irrigation, pollution, energy and many more issues. The chapter also discusses how professional ethics are not always aligned to business ethics and the dilemmas that this can create, especially where commercial benefits are at stake. The ethical dilemma of self‐deception is also discussed, and theories articulated of why individuals sometimes convince themselves that non‐ethical practices are acceptable in some instances. The important factor that arguably has a strong influence and link to professional ethics is culture and the cultural values of the construction industry and those construction client organisations that work within it.
