A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
From the Renaissance to the dawn of Modernism, ornament raised the issue of the identity and role of the designer, whether this be the high‐profile architect described by theorists in their treatises or a mere entrepreneur, master mason or even carpenter. It reflected the place allotted to artists and artisans, sculptors, painters, joiners or plasterers, in the production of architectural works. It said something crucial about the nature of the relation between buildings, clients and passers‐by. This chapter discusses the ways traditional decor revealed itself inseparable from the various subjects of architecture. Architecture is what happens when buildings begin to acquire a visage; ornament is like the mask or make‐up that participates in the emergence of this visage. Ornamental profusion of the 19th century is attributable to industrialisation. In the 20th century, different modes of alternative ornamental practices developed, such as the use of concrete formwork traces by Le Corbusier.
