A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Elegance (2007)
This chapter presents two essays by Ali Rahim, Hina Jamelle and Mark Foster Gage. It begins with an essay on the economies of elegance by considering the Residential Tower, Dubai. By suggesting a new approach to selling real estate, the design of the tower may influence how developers build and market condominiums in the future. The second essay by Gage argues for aesthetics as the keystone of a new theory of digital formalism to follow the demise of the linguistic mandate in architecture, which he ascribes both to Post‐Modernism and to ‘critical modernism’. Gage pleads for a new scopocentric approach to design, to replace the logocentric and logicocentric interests of Modernists, Post‐ Modernists and Late Modernists. He also claims that a new architectural aesthetics must be based upon some form of intuitive (‘visceral’, ‘precognitive’) visual intelligence, hence on some empathy with the body, sensations and desire.
