Engineered Nanoparticles Adversely Impact Glucose Energy Metabolism
Engineered nanoparticles, owing to their unique physicochemical properties, have found many applications in biomedicine, such as use as drug carriers and in cancer imaging and disease diagnostics. However, the expansion of the use of engineered nanoparticles has received attention for their potential toxic effects on human health, and there are increasing concerns regarding their toxicity with respect to cellular metabolism. As the most fundamental metabolic pathway, glucose energy metabolism, which provides the energy necessary for cells to grow and survive, is known to be adversely impacted by nanoparticles. Metabolic perturbation of glycolysis, tricarboxylic acid cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation that act together to extract energy from glucose has raised concerns about nanoparticles as potential risk factors in the development of metabolic disorders. Here we discuss adverse impacts of nanoparticles on key metabolic pathways, with a focus on their influence on glucose energy metabolism. Our aim is to highlight the safety concerns of nanoparticle exposure in their potentially deleterious effects on glucose metabolism and ATP generation.
