Temporary Uses Producing Difference in Contemporary Urbanism
In this chapter, we outline a theoretical plane, discussing urban space as a tensioned and dynamic field of interlinked, simultaneous differences. The notion of ‘difference’ – phrased by different authors as multiplicity, variety, alterity, otherness or heterotopia – is central to our conceptual approach. The contemporary debate views temporary uses either as instrumental tools of urban planning and management or as intrinsically valuable spaces and processes, often with political and emancipatory connotations. We bring these established positions together, discussing how these two ways to think about temporary uses are linked, respectively, to two socio‐cultural positions and practical interests, those of the planner/developer and of the activist/user. We argue that a foundational relation between space and the group that appropriates it is characteristic of the unique places temporary uses produce. The notion of a non‐commodified ‘right to the city’ as well as new definitions of ‘urban commons’ are central concerning such places.
