A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
The architecture of making home enables everyone to engage knowledgeably in the continuum of spatial thinking. This chapter is a range of exemplars that reveal architects working through differing poetic thresholds to create accessible architecture. The pragmatic adventurousness of Gothic architecture has an extraordinarily flexible manifestation in humbler institutional buildings and in domestic architecture. Carpentry, masonry and parametrics depend for their raw materials and advancement on elites of craftsmen (literally) and of mathematical thinking. The adventurous and experimental poetics of this ontology frames the work of many of the architects: Richard Blythe, dRMM, CRAB studio, Minifie van Schaik Architects, CZWG and Ushida Findlay. The architects in this book who work in this realm (companion architects in parentheses) include: John Brown, Peter Hogg + Toby Reed Architects, DSDHA (Lyons), m3architecture (SANAA), W Architects, Kristin Green Architecture, WOHA and the O'Donnell + Tuomey.
