Refrigeration and Heat Pumps
Refrigeration relies on substances (refrigerants) which, when they evaporate, absorb heat from the surrounding air. The cooled, conditioned air is then introduced into the occupied space. The choice of refrigerant fluid used for cooling is based on three factors: thermal properties of fluid, costs of manufacture and operation, environmental impact. It is common to see a single machine with a dual function working as a heat pump and a refrigerator. The most common types of refrigeration plant used today are vapour compression and vapour absorption systems. However, there are alternative technologies based on different thermodynamic principles which are not yet used extensively due to their complexity or limitation in providing capacity. An adsorption refrigeration system usually consists of four main components: a solid adsorbent bed, a condenser, an expansion valve, and an evaporator. The steam jet refrigeration system relies on the pressure/velocity/evaporation temperature relationship in a fluid.
