Simulating the Invisible: Max Fordham Designs Light, Air and Sound
This chapter describes how Max Fordham, a group of leading environmental engineers, customizes its workflows to suit each architectural design challenge. The office is arranged in five thematic engineering groups, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Acoustics, Sustainability and Light + Air. The office has found that creating teams enables in‐depth specialization and focus on particular issues. Digital tools offer certain types of analysis and accuracy that physical testing cannot accomplish. The Hayward Gallery renovation by architects Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios is reported to have challenged Max Fordham to improve the internal daylight qualities provided through the gallery's existing roof lights while ensuring that no direct sunlight reached the artworks. Another project with precise environmental requirements is the renovation and development of the historic Westminster Abbey triforium level in London, UK. The designers at Max Fordham were appointed specialist daylight consultants and conservation analysts for the project.
