WaterSenseSM is Common Sense
This article discusses the WaterSense(SM) label, a new voluntary partnership program launched by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) in 2007 that is expected to fill a much‐needed information gap by linking water efficient products and services directly to the nation's consumers. Products and services displaying the WaterSense label will meet USEPA's efficiency criteria without compromising performance and will be about 20% more water efficient than similar products. Stakeholders include water utilities, communities, manufacturers, and retailers. The article mentions the WaterSense certification program for irrigation system design, installation/maintenance, or performance auditing. Additional research is being done to include water‐using products in the WaterSense program that include high‐efficiency toilets, bathroom faucets, showerheads, weather‐based irrigation controllers, soil‐moisture sensors, drip irrigation, and commercial fixtures. Information is given for becoming a partner in the WaterSense program.
