Built‐up Areas
Buildings and Neighborhoods
Buildings respond to simple needs for protection from a site whose living conditions can be hostile and allow us to ensure the safety of its occupants, protect them from bad weather, create living spaces and privacy conducive to social relations and work or organize activities by storing equipment or food. In residential buildings, the private areas are divided into apartments that the residents occupy as owners or tenants. It also corresponds to the archetype of individual urban housing and is characterized by the freedom it offers its occupants, who are often the owners. Built spaces can also be distinguished according to criteria that are more directly related to urban planning and development. Verticality is generally associated with high‐density urban neighborhoods and with a certain mix of functions, shared by common built spaces through interior corridors and stairwells.
