Endocrine disruptors and the Water Industry
This paper discusses the endocrine system, which regulates the development, growth, reproduction, and behavior of an organism. Concern has grown about synthetic chemicals interfering with or disrupting the normal operation of this system because certain chemicals can mimic the hormones that serve as the messengers regulating the endocrine system. A three‐step approach by the water supply community to address this issue is recommended: consolidate scientific data about the issue; evaluate its effect on specific water quality; and, communicate these findings to the public.
