World Heritage
Alternative Futures
The World Heritage Convention has been described as being at a crossroads, a juncture at which clear thinking about its future sustainability, credibility, and long‐term viability is needed. The convention's popularity continues to rise, as does pressure for new listings; but the original intent of international cooperation seems to have shifted out of focus. Will strategies for the future of the World Heritage Convention be characterized by a conservative return to the rigorous and professional approaches applied earlier? There have been many calls for a return to these approaches, but they have also been judged as elitist and Eurocentric. Or will there be success in developing innovative twenty‐first‐century strategic approaches and heritage conceptions which ensure long‐term credibility and sustainability? Is the World Heritage Convention likely to be a successful tool over future decades? Could there be different systems which might be better suited to respond to contemporary challenges to the World Heritage Convention?
