Visualization of Failure Pattern in Specimens Containing Surface Crack Using X‐ray Computerized Tomography
Our former experiments showed that when transparent PMMA (PolyMethyl MethAcrylate) specimens containing 3‐D surface cracks were compressed, both wing and petal cracks emanated from the pre‐existing crack. However, it is important to investigate whether such cracking pattern also appears in other brittle geomaterials. In study, plaster specimens containing a pre‐existing 3‐D surface crack were compressed, and x‐ray CT was used to map the internal cracking pattern of the specimen. It was found that cracking does not necessarily pass through the pre‐existing cracks in more homogeneous samples whereas it does for more heterogeneous samples. The cracking pattern is of 3‐D nature, but it differs from those observed in PMMA. Thus, x‐ray CT serves as an useful tool for investigating 3‐D cracking in non‐transparent solids.
