Architectural Ordering, Composition, Form and Beauty
Charles Blanc, in ‘Art in Ornament and Dress’, illustrated order diagrammatically as pillars of: repetition, alternation, symmetry and progression supported by pillars of: consonance, contrast, radiation and gradation, failing which confusion, complication or monotony occurs unless structured in a meaningful way. During the process of design, the goal is to determine the desired character of a building. This is partly dependent on the adoption of a certain design or architectural code. In seeking a certain spirit of a building, we need imagination, feeling and inspiration and also intellect. But ‘good’ composition of a building can only be created through the application of a rigorous grammar of design and by applying appropriate syntax in order to satisfy certain rules of composition. In the creation of form, there are different ways of composition, through the application of different grammars of design and syntax.
