Exterior Corrosion of Cast‐Iron Pipe
This article discusses a field burial program by the National Bureau of Standards (NBS) to determine the effect of soil properties on the corrosion of the commonly used metals. During the 30‐year period between 1922 and 1952, data were obtained on 37,000 specimens of metals, alloys, and protective coatings after exposure up to 17 years at 128 test locations throughout the United States. In 1958, additional specimens of materials that had not been completely investigated in the earlier tests, including specimens of ductile‐iron pipe, were buried at six test sites.
