A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
This chapter provides an overview of a discernibly deepening engagement with performative scripting worldwide. Buildings that physically adapt to changes in environmental circumstances are part of an emerging architecture for which real‐time‐responsive performance is seen as a major opportunity. The chapter summarises the value of performative scripting as follows: scripting a masia for all possible situations so that a new variant of retro‐architecture might have its day, a banal encoded set of features that shows how a simple manorial house design can conform to site specificity, diurnal and seasonal shifts in light and weather, geographical location and orientation. It draws from two examples: the unscripted Para‐masia, an environmentally performative archetype with a 2,000‐year‐long tradition, and Dermoid, an environmentally performing responsive enclosure actively affording maximum comfort for the least use of materials.
