Drinking water has been the subject of laws and regulations in the United States for nearly 100 years. The roots of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) and its evolution over the years testify to the desire for and challenge of ensuring safe drinking water. This paper presents a historical review of the first drinking water law set in 1893, federal standards issued in 1914, the passage of the Safe Drinking Water Act in 1974, and the 1986 and 1988 amendments.
