A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Noise pollution is becoming one of the major concerns in both industrial fields and human daily life. Long‐term exposure to noise would affect mental and physical health. Porous materials have been recognized as the most effective passive sound absorption materials. Polymer foams, owing to their highly porous structure and viscoelastic matrix, offer excellent performance in acoustic absorption by the distortion and scattering incident and reflected sound waves. Various polymer foams such as melamine foam, polyurethane (PU) foam, polystyrene (PS) foam, and polypropylene (PP) foam and their composite foams have been used in the application of sound absorption. Developing novel approaches to fabricate polymer foams with high‐acoustic absorption performance is a hot spot in this field. This chapter will focus on the fundamental basis, critical influencing factors, characterization approaches, common sound absorption foams, and advanced fabrication methods for acoustic absorption polymer foams.
