A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
The state of California actively encourages the use of properly treated wastewater for irrigation and other nonpotable purposes. The Department of Health Services has established statewide wastewater reclamation criteria for various uses, based on the degree of human exposure to pathogens and other contaminants that could be present in treated wastewater. California's program of water reuse has been in place for many years, but has been expanding as more reclaimed wastewater becomes available to provide an economical alternative for purposes other than drinking. The possible health effects and the regulations to ensure safe use of reclaimed water are described in detail.
