Connecting the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning to the Discipline of Interior Design
This chapter suggests that the “scholarship of teaching and learning” (SoTL) offers a new perspective on interior design pedagogy. It addresses the following basic questions: (i) What does SoTL offer to interior design? (ii) What are the characteristics of a high‐quality SoTL‐based study in interior design? (iii) How can future generations of interior design educators benefit from understanding SoTL? Through a review of the literature and the examination of two cases studies that were conducted in a program accredited by Council for Interior Design Association (CIDA), at a public research university, answers to these questions are postulated – and the value of a SoTL approach is demonstrated. The case study 1 concentrates on ways of fostering better communication in the design process of interior design studios. The case study 2 focuses on the implementation of disciplinary interior design knowledge into the graphic design context of a portfolio course.
